This is definitely a system error and not a uDig issue. After running a recent 
update it seems to have somehow played with the permission setttings and 
sudo. Never did like this sudo thing in K/Ubuntu but whatever.

Not a uDig issue. Tested and works fine on OpenSuSE 10.3
