[udig-devel] UDIG and lucene

Hi all,
I have seen that udig contains Apache Lucene as plugin. Does it use it to
indexing in some way the spatial data and build a searchable spatial
catalog?
Are the lucene classes and methods available to a java developer who wants
to extend these indexing features, inside udig (eclipse)?
I'm not a developer, and I know this is a malformed question.
