Hello,
At present time, if an OS X user visits either VersionTracker.com or
MacUpdate.com, and enters the following keywords, this is what they get:
GIS:
VT -uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Shapefile:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Postgis:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
WMS:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
WMF:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Spatial:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Map Editor:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Map Viewer:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Cartography:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
Geospatial:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
uDig:
VT - uDig is not listed
MU - uDig is not listed
In summary, uDig is essentially inaccessible for most of the OS X
community, in terms of new users being afforded an introduction by way
of the most popular download websites.
I would be happy to spend a week or so posting uDig, with all the
right keywords, to all the software download sites, as well as sites
like wikipedia, making sure to include uDig under various sections
specific to GIS, geospatial, and so on. But first, I think a few
issues need to be addressed with the OS X distro of uDig, namely those
concerning the package install, apple human interface guidelines, and
a few other things OS X specific, as well as uDig specific. For
example, I think it would be prudent to incorporate a few simple
features to the uDig app that would serve to entice new users looking
to do site mesh-ups, geo-referencing of photos, and various Google
Earth related(KML/KMZ) tasks. I also think there should be a OS X'ish
theme to those areas touched by user's wishing to d/l uDig, so they
feel at home(OS X)
Let me know if this is something that is acceptable, and if so, please
advise me of any conditions or exceptions, as well as advice, so I go
bout doing it the right 'uDig' way.
Regards,
Eric
