Move default Project > Save directory out of uDIG.app package directory
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: UDIG-1358
URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/UDIG-1358
Project: uDIG
Issue Type: Improvement
Components: open and save
Affects Versions: UDIG 1.1 RC13, UDIG 1.1-RC12, UDIG 1.1 RC11, UDIG 1.1.RC10, UDIG 1.1.RC9, UDIG 1.1.RC8, UDIG 1.1.RC6a, UDIG 1.1.RC6, UDIG 1.1.RC5, UDIG 1.1 RC14, UDIG 1.1.1, UDIG 1.1.2, UDIG 1.2.M0, UDIG 1.2, UDIG 1.3, Distant Future
Environment: Test System #1. OS X 10.51, PPC G5, Quad 2.5GHz Processors, 16GB RAM Java 1.5.0_13-119
Test System #2. OSX 10.51, PPC G5, Dual 2.0 GHz Processors, 8GB RAM Java 1.5.0_13-119
Reporter: Eric Jarvies
Assignee: Jesse Eichar
Priority: Trivial
*1. Preparations:*
A. File > New > New Project (opens *New Project* window)
*2. Actions:*
A. Populate *Project Name* field with desired project name.
B. Allow default folder, or change to desired folder location.
*3. Problems:*
A. uDIG uses */Applications/udig/udig.app/Contents/MacOS/workspace* as it's default directory, always going back to it no matter if user has previously selected another directory.
B. Saving Projects into the uDig.app package folder increases the size of the uDig.app file.
C. If user wishes to copy onto another volume or computer, or perform any similar action, so comes with it(uDig.app) all the baggage stored inside of the uDig.app package folder, hence it is not factory default/clean.
*4. Observations:*
(none)
*5. Conclusions:*
A. I believe it better practice to default to ~/Documents/uDig directory.
B. I suggest adding the option to allow the user to set his/her own default directory, being able to do so in both the *New Project* window, and in the *uDig > Preferences* section.
*Summary*
Although trivial, this is part of the user's every day work routine, and thus it does indeed effect the amount of time and energy one spends having to attend to selecting the user's preferred default directory.
