I qualify; I will jump on IRC and see if I can help? As I understand it 
the aggregate functions (ie the ones used to figure out the categories) 
are not working very well on the geotools side of the fence. I think 
what we need to do is carefully write test cases and make sure we can 
trust these functions again?

The amount of code behind that Apply button is startling; I would start 
by breaking it into smaller chunks for testing :-)
