I am afraid the license restrictions on google maps prevent this (they
*really* want you to use javascript so they can track
your users). What I recommend in stead is the *tile* plugin that I have
in my community space; it makes use of
Nasa World wind servers - it is about the best we can do.
If you look around the web you will see a long history of excited people
reverse engineering the google map tile requests; and then being asked
to stop.
Yahoo has a much nicer setup; they are willing to sell you a yahooid
that you can use from a normal program to interact with their mapping /
search / etc... programs. You need to talk to them when you go live (or
ask your end users to supply a yahoo id). I have considered this as a
replacement for our search view, and making use of their geolocator api.
Another case of the data being more expensive than the programming

PS. It is possible (and fun) to make google tile request, but have a
look at the alternatives listed above.
