By following the Project Quick start you have definately taken the  
difficult route :-).  I'd recommend following: http:// 
udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/DEV/0+SDK+Quickstart instead

is a bunch of code examples the code examples project is one of the  
easiest to under stand.  These can be imported as projects into your  
workspace if you use subversion to check it out.
