[udig-devel] JGrass goes (mostly) LGPL - try II

Hi folks,
I tried to send this mail already a week ago but for some reason it
didn't come through to the list. Time to check that it really didn't,
to get buried under a pile of work, to get sick and well again and
here I go for a second try (copy/paste from the first):
Even if I was very offline since Victoria (two week of leftover
work :)), some important things happened. I think the most important is
the fact that a big chunk of the JGrass code will go LGPL.
I really feel that we need to better integrate into the udig codebase
at some point and, apart of actually writing code, that is the best way
to get started.
So everything of JGrass that doesn't contain strict
hydrological/geomorphological algorithms bound to the University
department of Trento will be put from GPL to LGPL. That means for
example that all the GRASS formats support as well as the Console and
OpenMI and base GIS tools code will go LGPL. Actually it is easier to
say what will not: the modules for analysis produced in cooperation
with the university will stay GPL.
This is an important move for us and I really hope that the
udig/geotools/geoserver community will appreciate this change and be
able to use some of our tools at some point.
Ciao,
Andrea
