[udig-devel] Getting started with uDig

I'm trying to get started using uDig and am having a number of problems.

I've downloaded udig-1.1-RC10a.linux.gtk.x86.zip and unzipped it.

I run udig.

If I try to click on the tutorial or help I get the message:
Unable to open web browser on {0}

I tried following the walkthrough in uDigWalkthrough-1.1.pdf, but dragging the 
DMS solutions WMS link from the web page onto the Layers View did nothing.

I tried to follow the section Adding a layer from projects view and selected a 
PostGIS data source host:www.refraction.net, port:5432, username:postgres
it then gave a message Connection to Database, but that never seemed to 
finish.

If I try to create a new Layer from a GeoTIFF using, File, New, New Layer, 
Files, Next,  and open a GeoTIFF I get:
File can not be read.  Could be a JAI configuration problem or a corrupted 
file.  Error recieved was: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: ImageRead: No 
OperationDescriptor is registered in the current operation registry under 
this name.

I didn't manage to find any installation instructions in the package or on the 
website.

Any pointers as to how I resolve these issues?
