Just a quick note. Justin (cc'ed) is implementing a GeoRSS output format
in Geoserver, so you may be interested in trying out a Geoserver trunk
nightlies (http://geo.openplans.org/nightly/trunk/) and turn whatever 
data you want into GeoRSS format (that
may give you a little more latitude when it comes to finding data sources).
