There will probably not be any improvement in raster support for uDig 
1.1; the version of GeoTools 2.2 we are using has not maintained its 
raster support.

For uDig 1.1.1 we will switch to GeoTools 2.3; the geotools community is 
adding additional raster formats on the stable branch (so no API change; 
just more formats). One such "format" that would allow you to work with 
ECW would be a bridge to GDAL.
