It might be Nvidia graphics driver issue, cairo and glitz with exactly 
the same versions work fine for me (intel 945). It would be helpful to 
know if native cairo apps on Gabriel's configuration are slow as well.

There is an alternative to cairo/draw2d (http://holongate.org/) but is 
seriously outdated (3.0 swt level)
