My thoughts are that would be brilliant.  For now the changes are not  
going to be significant in an API sense.  Although I am going to try  
and make it a little more flexible so something like that can be  
done.  But for now I aim to primarily simplify the implementation to  
make it simpler and more stable.  Issues like one layer beginning a  
zoom before another layer must be squashed.
